Recently I’ve been reading this book, Spirit Marriage: Intimate Relationships with Otherworldly Beings by Dr. Megan Rose and it’s a fascinating read so far (I’m about halfway through). Almost all literature I’d come across on the topic before was written from a negative perspective and I’m just so thrilled that there is a book out there that treats this long-standing and cross-cultural practice with the serious and respect that is usually only afforded to mainstream religion. I highly recommend it.
I’m actually planning on writing more on spirit marriage in future post, for reason I will explain later. In the meantime, I just had to share this amazing quote from the book that I believe encapsulates so well why spirit marriage is such a powerful and liberating, and therefore scary to religious authorities, practice:
”Spirit marriage makes us autonomous, powerful—our own spiritual authority. This is an idea that is rapidly becoming one of the strongest arguments for why I believe spirit marriage was demonized and eradicated by mainstream organized religions. Spirit marriages lead to a kind of self-sovereignty and self-governance, which require that you know yourself, claim your power, and then act in full agency for yourself and your community, regardless of what hegemonic forces may tell you. Spirit marriages can lead to audacity of spirit, spiritual transformation, and even social revolution.”
