In a post about the recent Grammy Awards, I had written that Kim Petras was the first trans artist to win one. While Petras is the first openly trans artist to win, there was another trans artist before her: legendary electronic music composer Wendy Carlos.
You’ve likely heard at least one of her compositions, since her music has been featured in several classic movies like Tron, The Shining and A Clockwork Orange. She was still in the closet when she in 1969 won a triple Grammy for her album Switched-on Bach, which popularised the synthesiser as an instrument.
Here’s an interview featuring her. I love how passionate she is when she speaks about her craft. A true visionary!
