Book recommendation: ‘Darśan. Seeing the Divine Image in India’ by Diana L. Eck

One of the most difficult things for many westerners to understand about Hinduism is its relation to and worship of images. Because we grow up under monotheist and Abrahamic hegemony, we are often influenced – whether or not we are actually religious – by its views. And in the Abrahamic traditions, the worship of imagesFortsätt läsa ”Book recommendation: ‘Darśan. Seeing the Divine Image in India’ by Diana L. Eck”

Book fair haul!

My favourite yearly event has finally arrived: the Gothenburg Book Fair! This is the largest literary event in Scandinavia and the second largest book fair in Europe. I never miss it (in non-pandemic times) and this year was no exception. To await buying more books than I can afford, I have imposed on myself theFortsätt läsa ”Book fair haul!”

A monastery in rural France

I am currently in France to visit family and today we were in one of the most beautiful parts of the country: Auvergne. We were there to visit my dear grandfather’s grave and on the way back, we stopped by a well-known monastery in the region: the Notre-Dame-de-l’Hermitage nunnery and sanctuary. Here are some photos:Fortsätt läsa ”A monastery in rural France”

Renewal

I finally had my gallbladder removed yesterday and the operation went well. I wasn’t particularly nervous prior to it since I’ve had a number of health issues through my life that have required surgery, and I know the routine pretty well by now. The only thing that worried me was whether I was going toFortsätt läsa ”Renewal”

Knowing Freya. Part 4: Her Husband and Children

I was originally planning on writing one post about Freya’s Husband and one about Her Children but there is so little information about Them all that I might as well write one short post instead of two very short one. Let’s start with the Husband, as He’s the one we know the most about. WhatFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 4: Her Husband and Children”

Knowing Freya. Part 3: Her Brother

How does one even begin to speak of Freyr, this great Lord of peace, abundance and growth? He gifts humanity with all that gives pleasure and joy. Of Him, Týr said in the Lokasenna: ”Freyr is best of all the exalted Gods in the Æsir’s courts:no maid he makes to weep,no wife of man,and fromFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 3: Her Brother”

Knowing Freya. Part 2: Parentage

Family ties when it comes to the Gods doesn’t really work like it does for humans. Non-corporal Consciousnesses do share bounds with one another but to describe Them as parent, sibling, progeny etc is to simplify things to make it understandable to the human mind. The reality of things is much more complex and sometimesFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 2: Parentage”

Knowing Freya. Part 1: Goddess of…?

There is a film I saw as a child about Noah and the flood. I can’t recall if this is something I saw on TV or if it was one of those VHS films produced by my parents church, but there is one scene in particular that has stuck with me. In it, Noah isFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 1: Goddess of…?”

Not everything is Christian baggage

In this blog, I don’t often bring up things I’m annoyed by or critical of in the wider Pagan/Heathen community. It’s not that I don’t think such things should be discussed. I’ve just preferred to put my time and energy elsewhere. But there is something that has been grinding my gears for so long thatFortsätt läsa ”Not everything is Christian baggage”

The Monk Life: Can you be a Pagan and a monk?

In a previous post, I mentioned that I lead a life I call ‘semi-monastic’. That is: I don’t live in a monastery but the way I live incorporates a lot of aspects of a traditional monastic life. Things like daily rituals and contemplation, simplicity and having few material possessions. I’ll get more in depth onFortsätt läsa ”The Monk Life: Can you be a Pagan and a monk?”
