It recently came out that yet another politician from the far-right Sweden Democrats has ties to a neo-nazi group. This time it was Rebecca Ädel, an elected official from Nynäshamn, who was revealed to have been active in the Nordic Resistance Movement. Not only that, but she was a columnist on their website. While IFortsätt läsa ”Why do nazis love wearing Thor’s hammer?”
The duty to remember
Recent surveys about how first time voters voted in the elections show something alarming: more than half of them chose far-right or far-right adjacent parties. Contrary to the stereotypes, it seems the new generation is a lot more conservative and close-minded than older generations. I’ve been asking myself: how come? Did they learn nothing fromFortsätt läsa ”The duty to remember”
Sadness – but also hope
The Swedish elections are nearly over. A few districts’ votes have yet to be counted but since the last votes to come in are from the Swedish nationals living in foreign countries – a group which is majority upper-clas and right-wing – the results will likely remain the same: Sweden will now have a right-wingFortsätt läsa ”Sadness – but also hope”
The silence is the loudest part
On Wednesday, the party leader of the far-right Sweden ‘Democrats’ came to Gothenburg to give a speech. Of course, there was a protest. I attended it and the turnout was disappointing, with not even a tenth of what it used to be 4 years ago. I remember how there were far more protesters than SD-supportersFortsätt läsa ”The silence is the loudest part”
Every day I wrestle with myself, trying to manage the anxiety I feel about the upcoming election. I make plans in case of the worst case scenario. Plans of taking my savings and starting anew in another place. Which I’ll still do if things get really bad and there is a serious threat to myFortsätt läsa ”Actually, no”
To be queer is to have no country
Election day is approaching and I have a terrible feeling. The far-right has become so normalised. They even have their ads on the trams and busses of the city. I can’t go anywhere without seeing the slogans and faces of politicians who want to take my rights away. And everywhere I overhear people having bigotedFortsätt läsa ”To be queer is to have no country”
The Lady with the Handbag
‘With the Purse as a weapon’ is a public statue in Alingsås, Sweden. It represents Danuta Danielsson, a Jewish Polish woman who was photographed hitting a nazi punk with her handbag at a demonstration in Växjö in 1985. Her own mother had survived the horrors of a concentration camp and Danuta was furious to seeFortsätt läsa ”The Lady with the Handbag”
Video from The Guardian about the Asatru Folk Assembly
This video was posted today on The Guardian‘s YouTube channel. It’s a short doc about the Asatru Folk Assembly and how they are misusing the Norse Pagan religion to promote racist ideas. Antiracist Heatheans are also interviewed to give a different view of what our religion can be.
URGENT: The Piripkura tribe could face complete genocide!
Unless a land protection order is renewed within 4 days, the Piripkura tribe in Brazil could face total destruction. They and many more tribes in the Amazon are at risk of genocide at the hand of greedy corporate interests and Bolsonaro’s racist hatred of Natives. To read more and help push for the renewal ofFortsätt läsa ”URGENT: The Piripkura tribe could face complete genocide!”
Why is YouTube helping the spread of fascist propaganda in Sweden?
For a while now, I and many others in Sweden have been spammed with content from a new alt-right channel every time we get on YouTube. I’ve clicked ‘hide this ad’ every single time and checked in that I don’t want to see this channel in my suggestions anymore. To no avail. Time and timeFortsätt läsa ”Why is YouTube helping the spread of fascist propaganda in Sweden?”
