Knowing Freya. Part 8: Chooser of the slain and Queen of Folkvang

Freya is a Goddess of many names. One of them is Valfreya, meaning ‘Freya of the slain’ or ‘Lady of the slain’. The reason for this is mentioned in the 14th stanza of Grímnísmál, a poem in which a disguised Oden tells the young Agnar about different realms and which Deities rule over them: ”FolkvangFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. 5 very queer Norse stories

An interesting article from PinkNews: https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2022/05/07/viking-norse-gods-lgbtq/ I’m particularly obsessed with this beautiful illustration of Thor:

Knowing Freya. Part 6: Animals

The old Norse religion, as well as much of modern Heathenry, could be quite accurately described as shamanistic. As such, it shares many components that are common in shamanistic spirituality. One of these is the belief in guiding animal spirits and power animals. The fylja, for example, is a personal guiding spirit which takes theFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 6: Animals”

Finally found some cup marks

In a museum. Still was interesting to see them in real life. They can be seen at the Museum of Gothenburg, where there is also an impressive Viking Age exhibit: If you ever find yourself in this beautiful city, I can highly recommend making a visit to the Museum of Gothenburg. There are artifacts fromFortsätt läsa ”Finally found some cup marks”

Knowing Freya. Part 3: Her Brother

How does one even begin to speak of Freyr, this great Lord of peace, abundance and growth? He gifts humanity with all that gives pleasure and joy. Of Him, Týr said in the Lokasenna: ”Freyr is best of all the exalted Gods in the Æsir’s courts:no maid he makes to weep,no wife of man,and fromFortsätt läsa ”Knowing Freya. Part 3: Her Brother”

Three things I want to do this year

I’m not really one to have new years resolutions and I haven’t made any for 2022, at least not in the sense of things I’ve promised myself to do. But I do have certain plans for this year about which I would like to write about. The first is to learn more and write aFortsätt läsa ”Three things I want to do this year”

Theories about the älvkvarnar

Today was another day of unsuccessfully looking for älvkvarnar, which I’ve learned are called ‘cup marks’ in English. This is what they’re supposed to look like: I’m suspecting that the many fallen leaves and the high amount of moss may be covering them up this time a year. I’ll try again in a few months.Fortsätt läsa ”Theories about the älvkvarnar”

Not everything is Christian baggage

In this blog, I don’t often bring up things I’m annoyed by or critical of in the wider Pagan/Heathen community. It’s not that I don’t think such things should be discussed. I’ve just preferred to put my time and energy elsewhere. But there is something that has been grinding my gears for so long thatFortsätt läsa ”Not everything is Christian baggage”

Types of relationships you can have with the Deities

Those of us who come from an Abrahamic background were taught to only see the Divine in the form of a Lord or a Heavenly Father. So, when getting into Polytheism it can be quite interesting – and sometimes confusing – to discover the myriad of ways Polytheists relate to the Divinities. Today, I wantedFortsätt läsa ”Types of relationships you can have with the Deities”

A haunting story song for Spooktober

Following the tragic death of Andrea Meyer, I’ve been listening to a lot of her music on YouTube. As a result, I’ve been getting a lot of new recommendations of Heathenry themed music and this has lead me to discover the Danish band Myrkur. Today I’d like to share one of my favourite songs ofFortsätt läsa ”A haunting story song for Spooktober”
