Some recent and fascinating Norse archaeological finds

There have been some very interesting archaeological finds related to the Norse faith recently. One of them is this golden disc found during an excavation in Denmark: This one is particularly important as it has the oldest known runic inscription mentioning Odin. The runes state: ”He is Odin’s man”, likely referencing a ruler of someFortsätt läsa ”Some recent and fascinating Norse archaeological finds”

World’s oldest known runestone found in Norway

Fascinating news from Norway: Archeologist say they have found the oldest known runestone! Found during the excavation of a grave in Tyrifjorden, west of Oslo, the stone has several inscriptions. Not all make linguistic sense but one on the front reads ”idiberug”, which could be the name of a person or family. The archaeologists estimateFortsätt läsa ”World’s oldest known runestone found in Norway”

What is the oldest known depiction of Thor?

Januari is a month when many Heathens pay extra tribute to Thor. In pre-Christian Northern Europe, mid-january would be the traditional time for Yule and blóts were often held in honour of the Deities of the season, among which is Thor. The Yuletide often ended with a feast and a blót to Him. And sinceFortsätt läsa ”What is the oldest known depiction of Thor?”

Happy Winter Solstice!

Now the longest night of the year has begun. While Sunna was still visible in the sky, I made a small offering of herbal tea and one of the cookies I made especially for the occasion, using the same recipe I did a few days ago. I just substituted the cacao for 0.5 dl (0.2Fortsätt läsa ”Happy Winter Solstice!”

A happy place

I’ve been waiting for this for a while! Gothenburg’s Maritime Museum and Aquarium has been closed for a few years for renovations and now it has opened again. This is one of my favourite museums and somewhere I like to go when I need to collect my thoughts. Here you can see various boat modelsFortsätt läsa ”A happy place”

A gray day in November

Wandering through the city of Borås in western Sweden. There is so much amazing public art here, these are just a fragment, but they’re two of my favourites.

Why do nazis love wearing Thor’s hammer?

It recently came out that yet another politician from the far-right Sweden Democrats has ties to a neo-nazi group. This time it was Rebecca Ädel, an elected official from Nynäshamn, who was revealed to have been active in the Nordic Resistance Movement. Not only that, but she was a columnist on their website. While IFortsätt läsa ”Why do nazis love wearing Thor’s hammer?”

Book fair haul!

My favourite yearly event has finally arrived: the Gothenburg Book Fair! This is the largest literary event in Scandinavia and the second largest book fair in Europe. I never miss it (in non-pandemic times) and this year was no exception. To await buying more books than I can afford, I have imposed on myself theFortsätt läsa ”Book fair haul!”

Sadness – but also hope

The Swedish elections are nearly over. A few districts’ votes have yet to be counted but since the last votes to come in are from the Swedish nationals living in foreign countries – a group which is majority upper-clas and right-wing – the results will likely remain the same: Sweden will now have a right-wingFortsätt läsa ”Sadness – but also hope”

To be queer is to have no country

Election day is approaching and I have a terrible feeling. The far-right has become so normalised. They even have their ads on the trams and busses of the city. I can’t go anywhere without seeing the slogans and faces of politicians who want to take my rights away. And everywhere I overhear people having bigotedFortsätt läsa ”To be queer is to have no country”
